If the NFL has taught us anything through the first five weeks of the 2025 season, it's that no lead is safe.
Of the 78 games played through Week 5, 25 of them have featured a game-winning score in either the final three minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, the most in any season at this point in NFL history. Incredibly, there have been 17 games with a go-ahead score occurring within the final minute of regulation, the most through five weeks of a season since the 1970 merger.
In Week 5 alone, half of its games (seven of 14 total) had a game-winning score in the final three minutes of regulation or in OT, tying for the most such games in a single week since… well, Week 3. (Prior to that, it last happened in Week 15 of the 2022 season.) Additionally, of those 17 total contests through five weeks that saw a go-ahead score in the final 60 seconds of regulation, five of them have happened in the past five days.
That recent and particular five-game string of chaos inside the final minute of regulation started in another continent, as the Minnesota Vikings closed its latest European trip in London with a 21-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With his team trailing 17-14, Vikings QB Carson Wentz orchestrated a game-winning drive; he went 9-for-9 for 71 passing yards, with his final throw resulting in a 12-yard touchdown to Jordan Addison with 25 seconds remaining.
The victory not only moved the Vikings to 5-0 all-time in regular-season games in London, but it gave Minnesota a winning record (3-2) heading into its much-needed bye. The Vikings have a Week 6 bye for just the sixth time in franchise history, with all six seasons sporting a 3-2 record or better (3-2 in 2006 and 2025; 4-1 in 1992; 5-0 in 1998, 2003, 2016 and 2024).
