The Kansas City Chiefs are now 2-3 following the Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but even more concerning is the latest KC news to hit social media.
The script has flipped on the Chiefs š±,ā B/R Gridiron posted on October 7, sharing two problematic trends. The first is that Kansas City is now 0-3 versus āteams with winning recordsā this year, per B/R Gridiron.
The second was originally reported on by ESPN writer Bill Barnwell, just after the Monday Night Football loss on October 6. Chiefs in games decided by seven points or less,ā Barnwell listed. ā2024: 10-0. 2025: 0-3.ā
While the latter trend felt like it was bound to reverse itself following KCās bizarre run of one-score victories last season, the first statistic is a bit alarming. Typically, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs thrive against top competition.
Weāve seen their recent run of dominance in this area play out in the postseason most of all, as Kansas City has never missed an AFC title game since passing the torch from Alex Smith to Mahomes. The Chiefs have also obviously won three Super Bowls, appearing in five total NFL championship games.
Chiefsā Issues vs. Winning Teams Will Be Put to the Test Again in Week 6
The Chiefs are still without star wide receiver Rashee Rice, which provides some reason for optimism beginning in Week 7 and beyond. On the morning of October 7, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer reminded fans of this on X.
If you want to think the Chiefs arenāt any good, youāre gonna look dumb,ā Breer wrote. āWhat I saw last night was an offense thatās getting betterāand still hasnāt played a single snap with its best (by a good margin) skill-position player, and has a rookie left tackle improving every week.ā
The hope is that Breer and the more half-glass-full KC supporters are right, and the reigning AFC champs turn things around with Rice back in the lineup.
Unfortunately, their next big test will come before he returns, as the 4-1 Detroit Lions are coming to town to face the Chiefs without Rice ā putting this negative 2025 trend under the microscope once again.
Patrick Mahomes Says Chiefs Have āLost Too Many Games Alreadyā After Week 5 Defeat vs. Jaguars
The NFL is commonly referred to as a game of inches. In recent seasons, the Chiefs have often been the best at making sure those narrow moments determined by inches swing in their favor. But that hasnāt been the case in 2025.
āI feel like we have the guys and weāve executed at certain points of the game and looked really good,ā Mahomes told reporters during his postgame press conference after Week 5. āAnd then we crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes and interceptions and fumbles, or whatever [it] is. Weāve kind of done that to ourselves all year long⦠In this league, itās so close that those [plays] change games.ā
Mahomes is aware of the razor-thin margin of error. Heās been on both sides of it, and lately, heās been on the wrong side of it more often than heād like.
āWe got to be better,ā the Chiefsā superstar QB urged after the latest loss.
Adding: āWeāve lost too many games already. And so, weāve got to find a way to be better as a team and come together and play better throughout the rest of the season.ā
