Paul Scholes drops powerful Liverpool vs Man Utd prediction for crucial Anfield showdown,‘find a way somehow…’

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes told Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher exactly what he would do for the Red Devils’ Premier League clash at Anfield this month.

The Red Devils’ first contest in the aftermath of the October international break will be against defending Premier League champions Liverpool away from home.

Manchester United are 10th in the Premier League table after their opening seven league matches, while second-place Liverpool are five points clear of the Red Devils.

Ruben Amorim’s men will visit Anfield on 19th August and United face an uphill task against Liverpool after their erratic form in the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The Red Devils have three wins from seven Premier League matches and United defeated Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford ahead of the start of the October break.

Jamie Carragher asks Paul Scholes what Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim should do vs reigning Premier League champions Liverpool

United’s Premier League result over Sunderland on Saturday eased the pressure on Ruben Amorim, who has faced immediate criticism in the 2025-26 campaign.

The Red Devils have been unable to string together back-to-back Premier League wins under United manager Amorim since his arrival from Sporting CP in 2024.

Amorim has also faced mounting speculation over his future at Old Trafford in recent weeks amid the Red Devils’ mixed set of results under his reign this season.

Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher asked Paul Scholes what he would do if he were in Amorim’s shoes as United manager going into the Liverpool match.

Scholes suggested that Amorim should do everything that he can to secure “something” at Anfield and try and aim for a draw at the bare minimum.

“Yeah, he’s got to think about trying to get something from Anfield; I’d just be thinking about drawing the game,” he told Carragher.

“Find a way somehow to stop them from scoring. Now, that’s a totally different mentality from what I’m saying about Arsenal going to Liverpool or someone else going to Liverpool, where you’re going to win the league.”

United legend Scholes believes that United’s inconsistent form and struggles under Amorim have made the result at Anfield feel more “predictable” than ever before.

The 50-year-old ex-United and England midfielder insisted that there is not much “confidence” that can be placed in the players to secure a result against Liverpool.

“But United are in such a rut,” Scholes continued.

“I can’t remember the last time they won a big game. Or a game that meant a lot.

“Possibly [Manchester] City last year? Unfortunately, this group of players got that much in a bad book [that] you’ve got no confidence that they’re going to get you out of it.

“You feel almost… It’s almost predictable. They’ll go there and get beat.”

Liverpool have lost their last three matches across all competitions under Reds boss Arne Slot ahead of hosting United at Anfield in the Premier League on 19th October.
