A year at Miami playing in the defensive backfield and learning from Kam Kinchens and James Williams, two guys now playing in the NFL, was valuable for Kaleb Spencer, though it also crystallized one thing in his mind.
Safety wasn’t his future position. Linebacker was.
That was part of the reason Spencer transferred closer to home to play at Virginia Tech (2-4, 1-1 ACC), where he’s since moved around, starting out at the star linebacker spot before sliding inside.
The junior seems to have found a home, watching his playing time increase dramatically as the Hokies have navigated roster upheaval and making a team-high 17 tackles the last two weeks, with a half tackle for a loss.
