Today, Jayson Tatum is the face of the Boston Celtics, but there was a time when he was a young player trying to make a name for himself with Duke.
The school still holds a special place in his heart, and Tatum is looking to help them out years after graduating.
According to Joe Tipton, Tatum is coming back to Duke as their Chief Basketball Officer.
“Jayson Tatum is joining Duke’s staff as their ‘Chief Basketball Officer’, the school announced. Tatum, a 6x NBA All-Star, will mentor Duke players, offer guidance on career management, advise coach Scheyer on roster construction, and more,” Tipton posted on X.

This is quite the job for Tatum, and Duke will be happy to have him.
It’s not clear how much time this will take, but right now, Tatum has plenty to spare.
It is expected that Tatum will miss all of the 2025-26 season because of his Achilles injury.
However, he has suggested that he would like to come back at some point in the season, but even the best-case scenario won’t have him back on the court until around the playoffs.
During his wait, Tatum will be rehabilitating, but he will also be able to chip in with Duke.
This new job will help the next generation of Duke players, but it’ll also give Tatum some important leadership opportunities.
Being a mentor might enhance several aspects of his game.
Some fans have said that Tatum could improve the way that he guides and leads his Celtics, so maybe working with Duke will help with that.
Celtics fans shouldn’t worry because this new position won’t put his role with Boston at risk.
In fact, it could help him be a stronger and more strategic player when he finally comes back.
