Ruben Amorim should make a Man United player who was the best-rated in the Premier League his number one choice.
The game against Sunderland was arguably United’s best performance of the season so far, leading many to believe that the side may be turning a corner under Amorim. They face a trip to Anfield to play against Liverpool after the international break, and the manager will have some tough selection choices.
Amorim has to pick Lammens after best-rated PL performance
The goalkeeper position has been a big issue for United over the past few years, but based on his performance against Sunderland, Lammens may solve that issue. According to the Whoscored.com match ratings, Lammens was the best-rated goalkeeper in the Premier League last weekend, beating the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, David Raya and Jordan Pickford.
Lammens’ impressive outing on Saturday raises the question of whether he should be the starting goalkeeper for United rather than Bayindir, and to be honest, it’s not really a question. He made more saves than any keeper in Europe last season for Royal Antwerp, and looked commanding when collecting the ball and attacking aerial threats from the Black Cats.
During the game, Man United fans could be heard singing “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?”. Ruben Amorim should listen to the United fans’ reaction to Lammens’ performance and make him the number one keeper at Old Trafford, as the 23-year-old could easily become one of the best not only in the Premier League but also in the world.
Schmeichel says Lammens reminded him of Van der Sar
Following the Man United fans’ chants comparing Lammens to former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, the Danish legend responded by speaking on BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, praising Lammens after his debut.
Schmeichel said: “It was nice to see, first of all, a clean sheet, and then a really good and solid goalkeeping performance. There was some reminiscence of Edwin [Van der Sar], he had a couple of long balls up with his right foot and with his left foot, and you think ‘woah, that’s quite good!’
“I think his confidence grew, and he came for the crosses. You could see from the first cross he came for, you could see Matthijs De Ligt’s reaction to it; it was fantastic, defenders want that when they’re under the cosh.”
Lammens will now hope he can instantly become a favourite with the Man United fans when they play against Liverpool at Anfield, hoping to hold the league champions to a clean sheet in their own backyard.
