Attempt to sign Manchester City outcast revealed – Move could happen in January due to AFCON

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town.

He made 19 Premier League appearances, Ipswich were relegated, and the midfielder ended up back at Manchester City. This season, he’s played once in the Carabao Cup and hasn’t even been on the bench in league games. Phillips is clearly not part of Pep Guardiola’s plans, unless there’s a dramatic change.

AreaNapoli report Napoli attempted to sign the Manchester City player in the summer.

This happened in the ‘final hours’ of the window. Sporting director Giovanni Manna proposed an initial loan with an option to buy.

The move failed due to a shortage of time but a January approach is still on the cards. This is because Napoli star Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa will play in the Africa Cup of Nations. That tournament runs from late December to January 18th, so with time for recovery afterwards, maybe celebrations, it could see a player out until February.

This will leave Antonio Conte’s side light in midfield, and can reignite a move for the Manchester City outcast.

Whether Napoli offer another initial loan with an option to buy remains to be seen. In the past, Juventus have also been linked with the 29-year-old, but nothing for off the ground.
