Opinion: Everton may not be the right January move for wantaway £36m Manchester United player

Everton are being linked with a move to sign Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee, but a move to Merseyside may not be the best step.

David Moyes does not appear to know his best option in Everton’s attack just yet.

Thierno Barry was substituted for Beto at half-time against Crystal Palace on Sunday, just weeks after Beto was hooked at half-time for Barry.

The chopping and changing looks set to continue until January, when Everton may move for another striker.

Everton-linked Joshua Zirkzee wants out of Manchester United

Everton only signed Barry over the summer, but the Toffees may need to look at other striking options.

Reports this week suggested that Everton are keen on Joshua Zirkzee, who is out of favour at Manchester United.

Zirkzee joined United in 2024 but has quickly fallen down the pecking order after the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Seso.

The Dutchman has not started a single Premier League game this season and has managed just 74 minutes across three substitute appearances.

The Daily Mail now claim that Zirkzee is ‘deeply frustrated’ at United and wants out of Old Trafford in January.

Zirkzee wants to play for the Netherlands at the World Cup next summer and believes that a move is vital to his chances.

A loan move may be ideal for Zirkzee in order to play first-team football, and Everton may consider a move for the £36million attacker.

Everton may not be the best move for Joshua Zirkzee

Zirkzee has bags of technical ability, but he may not be the right fit for Everton.

David Moyes needs a centre-forward he can trust to lead the Everton attack and feed off the likes of Jack Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Iliman Ndiaye.

Zirkzee may be a physical presence, but his time at United has shown that he isn’t an ideal fit as a lone striker.

The former Bayern Munich man loves to drop deep to get on the ball and actually looked more impressive as a number 10 last season.

Zirkzee just doesn’t fit the mould of a centre-forward who can lead Everton’s attack, and signing him to play as a number 10 doesn’t really work either.

Everton already have the aforementioned Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall and Ndiaye, who can all play as a number 10.

Carlos Alcaraz impressed against Palace and would also prefer to play in that position, so Everton are stacked with attacking midfield options.

A true centre-forward is needed, and Zirkzee’s desire to drop deep means he may not be exactly what Everton need in January.
