Bill Belichick, UNC issue statements disputing departure rumors

In hopes of quelling rumors that Bill Belichick and UNC were exploring departure scenarios, the coach and athletic director each issued a statement.

Belichick’s read:

“I’m fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here.”

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham was similarly terse:

“Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and the University.”

The statements ,which were posted on X at 9:36 p.m., followed a day of rumors and reports that Belichick might not complete his first season as the head coach in Chapel Hill.

Potential exit strategy discussions regarding Belichick’s future have begun according to 24-7 Sports’ Andrew Jones.

UNC is 2-3 with wins over a struggling Charlotte program and FCS Richmond. Their games against Power 4 conference opponents have each been lopsided losses. The Tar Heels were outscored 120-33 in those defeats.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted the discussions appear to stem from “potential rule violations” after reports surfaced that “an assistant coach was suspended for providing extra benefits” to the families of players, while players were selling their complimentary tickets.

“There are many other violations that have occurred, many on the recruiting front,” Jones reported on 24-7.

Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract with UNC in December. but UNC, according to Jones, could use the above violations as a potential way to get out of paying his buyout.
