Man Utd will look to strtengthen in January with Fabrizio Romano explaining who they might be targeting.

The priority for Manchester United during the summer was always going to be one that fans had to get on board with as several high profile and expensive players departed.

Rúben Amorim inherited an imbalanced squad with a mixture of overpaid individuals who weren’t contributing or who didn’t want to contribute, with others who are honest, if not entirely up to the task of bringing the glory days back to Old Trafford.

Fabrizio Romano on Man Utd’s transfer priority

He said: “I think it’s a possibility for Man United to go for a new midfielder in January, then in this case will depend on opportunities. I don’t think the January window not just for Man United but in general is about big big names moving. Unless there’s an opportunity of a big name, I think that has to be the window of a loan deal or a last minute chance on the market.

“For example Man United tried for Connor Gallagher in the final days of the summer transfer window, so that kind of opportunity in case he becomes available or any other player with that kind of skill set becomes available on a good deal, maybe with loan with option to buy for Man United might be interesting but at the moment we’re not in that direction yet.

“Man United in 2026 whether it’s going to he January or summer transfer window want to change something in the midfield and so that’s going to be an important position to cover.”

What has Sir Jim Ratcliffe said about Amorim’s future

Amorim has spent most of his time at United battling with players who don’t want to be there and with players who aren’t good enough, despite results not being as good as many would hope, he has been given a huge vote of confidence from the man in charge, Sir Jim Radcliffe.

“He has not had the best of seasons," said Ratcliffe on The Times’ business podcast. "Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be. The press, sometimes I don't understand," he said. "They want overnight success. They think it's a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow.”

"You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week." There is a fine line, Amorim needs time with his own players, however, there also needs to be signs that there are improvements. There have been some, but they need to start getting more visible and more consistent.
