Barcelona and Real Madrid already have a head start in the race for Manchester United target

One of the biggest transfer sagas of this summer in the Premier League involved Liverpool and Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace captain was a whisker away from joining the Merseyside club on Deadline Day, only for the transfer to collapse in the eleventh hour.

Guehi, being a true professional, has shown no drop-off in performances for Oliver Glasner’s side. Despite knowing he isn’t going to stay long with the Eagles, the Englishman continues to give his all week in and week out, in what has been a very impressive start to the new season for Palace.

Once Liverpool’s move for Guehi fell through, clubs around Europe started getting attentive, and Manchester United were amongst them. Now, according to Sky Sports (h/t Fichajes), Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid already have a head start in the race for the English centre-back.

What would United gain from signing Guehi?

Guehi’s contract expires next summer, and in January, he would be free to negotiate terms with foreign clubs. Despite many Premier League clubs being interested in his signature, the lure of playing for one of Spain’s big two might prove too difficult to resist.

Liverpool, obviously, are bound to be in the mix for his signature. Having come so close to signing him back in the summer, there is no way they would abandon their pursuit. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have earmarked him as a replacement for Dayot Upamecano, who, incidentally, is also a Manchester United target.

Manchester United placed a lot of focus on reinforcing the attack and the goalkeeping department this summer, and the midfield and defence could see new signings in the upcoming transfer windows. Specifically, the centre-back region could do with some bolstering.

A De Ligt – Guehi partnership, anyone?

Among the current options, Matthijs de Ligt is immovable. Alongside him, Leny Yoro has done a great job, but he is still a developmental bet, much like Ayden Heaven. Lisandro Martinez is exceptional when fit, but along with Luke Shaw, the duo is extremely injury-prone.

That leaves Harry Maguire, who himself has a contract situation to deal with at Manchester United ahead of the upcoming summer. Signing someone like Guehi would be a statement for the Red Devils, especially considering the competition involved. Let’s wait and see how the cookie crumbles.
