Miami Heat two-time NBA champion head coach Erik Spoelstra is expected to be named the next head coach for the USA men’s basketball national team, according to a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Spoelstra, 54, will succeed Steve Kerr as Team USA’s head coach for the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He previously served as a lead assistant for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics, when the U.S. won the gold medal.
2028 will mark the fourth consecutive Olympics that Team USA has had a different head coach. Former San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich coached the U.S. in 2021, with Kerr serving as a lead assistant, and legendary Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski coached Team USA in 2016.
Spoelstra is the longest tenured active head coach in the NBA, having compiled a 787-572 record in 17 seasons as head coach for the Heat. He ranks fifth in NBA history with 110 playoff victories and has led the Heat to six NBA Finals appearances.
Team USA men’s basketball has won the gold medal in each of the past five Olympics dating back to 2008.
