Romano says United are in talks to sign one of their current players on an extended contract.
The October international break is always a strange time for Premier League clubs, as a lot of their players will be away, but also it is the first time when form really gets scrutinised and managers could be under considerable pressure.
If a player has less than six months left on their deal in January, clubs in Europe can make an approach to sign a pre-contract agreement, securing a player for free when their deal expires. Man United will want to make sure this doesn’t happen to any of their players.
Man United “in talks” to sign Harry Maguire contract extension
However, previous reports have said that Maguire would need to take a pay cut to sign a new contract extension at Old Trafford. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that moves are being made to keep Maguire at the club.
He posted on X: “Manchester United are in talks with Harry Maguire over a new deal with existing contract due to expire in June. Face to face meeting with his camp took place in the recent days and more will follow to discuss conditions. MUFC happy with Maguire’s contribution + leadership.”

Previous reports had linked Maguire with a move away from United before Amorim was the manager, but it is understood that the United boss is very keen on the English centre-back, and views him as a valuable member of his squad.
Which other Man United contracts are expiring?
Other than Maguire, there are three other Man United players whose deals are currently due to expire in June, all of which are more likely to leave the club than sign new deals based on reports in recent months.
The biggest name is Casemiro, who at the age of 33, has seen a gradual decrease in his form for United. He was heavily linked with a move to re-unite with Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in the summer, but it didn’t materialise. He wanted to stay at United to give himself the best chance to make Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil World Cup squad.
However, it is likely that he will leave as a free agent in the summer, and the Saudi Pro League seems the most likely destination currently.
Tyrell Malacia’s contract is also due to expire in June, and seeing as he was a member of Amorim’s summer ‘bomb squad’, he will likely leave as a free agent rather than signing a new deal with the Red Devils. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is also expected to leave at the end of the season after signing a new one-year deal in the summer.
