Everton have been linked with a January approach for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The 29-year-old has previously played under David Moyes during the Scot’s time at West Ham.
Indeed, struggling for minutes at Manchester City, Phillips joined the Hammers in January 2024.
However, the move south did nothing to resurrect Phillips’ ailing career, featuring in just 8 error strewn games.
A low point for the former Leeds player came following a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United.
With the Hammers 3-1 up, Phillips conceded a penalty, leading to a Newcastle comeback. Following an altercation with supporters at full-time, Phillips was seen giving them the middle finger.
The midfielder was excellent during his time at Leeds, and excelled internationally, but his 2022 move to City has stunted his career.
PHILLIPS NOT WHAT EVERTON NEED IN JANUARY
Everton will be looking to recruit in January, but surely a midfielder will not be a priority.
The Blues are lacking at full-back and need to reinvest in the forward line, which is limited to say the least.
Idrissa Gana Gueye will be off to AFCON in December, but the arrival of Merlin Rohl should cover the Senegalese international’s absence.
Phillips had a torrid time at West Ham, so it seems unlikely that Moyes would be eager for a reunion.
He’s certainly got ability, but attempts to rejuvenate his career have been fruitless. A 2024 loan to Ipswich Town was equally as poor as his time at the London Stadium.
Under contract at City until 2028, any move for Phillips would likely be a loan until the end of the season.
Perhaps the midfielder has seen Jack Grealish’s revitalisation since joining the Toffees and sees an opportunity to resurrect his own.
If he can get back to the form of five years ago, he’d be an asset. However, recent loan moves have been disastrous and we need to focus on recruitment in other departments.
