Everton plot winter raid on Manchester City for £42 million flop, player has no future at Etihad

Everton will reportedly look to sign 29-year-old English international Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Kalvin Phillips is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees are scouring the market for a holding midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. So, the 29-year-old Manchester City outcast has emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit. Meanwhile, the former Leeds United mainstay has no future at the Etihad, and a winter exit is likely.

Kalvin Phillips and his Manchester City woes

Kalvin Phillips has been a peripheral figure since joining Manchester City from Leeds United in a deal worth £42 million, plus £3 million in add-ons, in July 2022. The Englishman was among the Premier League’s best midfielders when he moved to the Etihad after his exploits for Leeds United.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled to make his mark at Manchester City, having failed to win over Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City manager has barely used the former Leeds United midfielder, and the player reached the lowest ebb of his career when Guardiola branded him “overweight” a few years ago. Additionally, loan moves with West Ham United and Ipswich Town did not work out either.

Phillips is back at Manchester City after an underwhelming loan spell with Ipswich Town, and he has managed only seven minutes of game time thus far in the 2025/26 season. So, it is hardly surprising that the English midfielder has no future at the Etihad. The situation has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, with Everton among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.

Another move across the Premier League on the horizon?

Kalvin Phillips has been on Everton’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as the Toffees are scouring the market for a holding midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. While David Moyes has a stacked midfield unit in his squad, Idrissa Gueye is on the wrong side of 30.

With the veteran Senegalese midfielder approaching the twilight of his career, Everton can do with a long-term replacement. So, Phillips has emerged as a viable target for the Merseyside club, and an initial loan deal for the 29-year-old Englishman may be on the cards.

With Phillips having no future at Manchester City, the Toffees will fancy their prospects of securing his services in the winter transfer window. It will be interesting to see if Everton can land the struggling English midfielder in the coming weeks.
