Gary Lineker has admitted to Micah Richards and Alan Shearer that one Manchester United legend showed his “self-deprecating” mentality over his time in football.
The 64-year-old former Match of the Day presenter linked up with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards for a ‘top 10’ quiz episode for their Rest Is Football podcast.
Gary Lineker hosted the quiz and Premier League legend Shearer and Richards were asked to name the players who have scored the most times outside of the box.
The format was around players in England’s top-flight domestic competition, with all-time leading scorer Shearer correctly identifying himself in the No 5 spot.
Shearer then singled out one former Manchester United and England star for the top 10 and thought that he even scored more times than himself outside of the box.

Both Shearer and Lineker recently crossed paths with Wayne Rooney at the ‘Legends of Football’ event earlier this week at Grosvenor House in London.
Lineker was honoured at the event with an award, with United all-time leading scorer Rooney presenting the honour to The Rest Is Football co-host.
The former England and Barcelona striker told Shearer and Micah Richards that Rooney showed his “self-deprecating” side at the Legends of Football event.
“He’s some player, Wayne Rooney,” Lineker said on the podcast.
“Do you know what was lovely? When we had the legends dinner that we talked about on the question-answer episode, he’s so loved, isn’t he?
“When he got up there, as were you when you [Shearer] got on stage as well, but I mean, and he was self-deprecating, wasn’t he?”

Gary Lineker sparks hilarious reactions from Micah Richards and Alan Shearer after he reveals what Wayne Rooney did
Both Richards and Shearer were left in stitches after Lineker recalled Wayne Rooney’s time on the stage at Legends of Football on Monday in London.
Lineker revealed that Rooney talked about the “amount of careers” that he has had and dropped an X-rated response when he was talking about his managerial run.
“When he said, you know, he was talking about me, obviously he’s talking about the broadcasting side of it and he said he was sitting down trying to learn and stuff like that,” he continued.
“And he said talking about the amount of careers, he said, ‘You know I’ve had three, this is my third career now,‘ and he went, ‘Obviously, I was a bit s— at the one in the middle,’ but I thought very self-deprecating. Bless him.”
Rooney has been out of management since his ill-fated spell at Plymouth Argyle came to an end in 2024, which was another setback in his coaching career.
