Bruno Fernandes has been absolutely vital for Manchester United since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020, being handed the captain’s armband for recognition of his role in the squad.
Since Ruben Amorim has arrived, the Portugal international has taken on two very different roles, last season in a more attacking position, sitting just behind the striker, and this season dropping deeper to a more central role.
Last year the club captain truly lead by example as he was United’s top goalscorer and registered the most assists for the side, with 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 games.
As such, it’s no real surprise that his name ended up on the shortlist of other sides over the summer, most notably with Al-Hilal launching a £100 million bid for the midfielder.
Ultimately Fernandes rejected the move, however it hasn’t stopped the Saudi side from looking to the Portugal international as new reports have emerged suggesting more attempts to sign the talented midfielder will come in January.
However, in Portugal’s pre-match conference for their World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, Bruno Fernandes attacked the rumours head-on.
O Jogo has reported the 31-year-old speaking about the renewed links to a Saudi move, with Fernandes commenting: “That’s an impossible scenario to imagine.”
He continued: “I have no idea if there’s any truth to it. I like to enjoy the moment, and the most important thing for me is to represent the national team, because it’s a source of enormous pride.
“I don’t know if I’ll play tomorrow, much less if I’ll play outside of Manchester in a year. It’s not something that worries me. I’m happy where I am, otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed. But it’s something that honestly doesn’t really bother me.”
It’s understood that sides interested in Fernandes are looking to make the most of the situation with next summer marking the midfielder entering the last year of his contract at Old Trafford.
As such, next summer will be the last chance United have to cash in on their captain to avoid losing him for free the following year, unless of course the club look to extend his contract further.
