Lakers' next big trade should go through JJ Redick's former team

If the Los Angeles Lakers are looking for their next big splash on the trade market, then they needn't search any [further than JJ Redick's](https://lakeshowlife.com/jj-redick-perfect-coach-save-dalton-knecht-disaster) former team: The Philadelphia 76ers. Philadelphia recently completed a months-long negotiation process with Quentin Grimes that ended with the promising wing accepting his qualifying offer.

Running the risk of losing Grimes to unrestricted free agency in 2026, the 76ers may soon be willing to trade their productive wing.

Los Angeles would be wise to capitalize on an opportunity that appears destined to materialize. Grimes should have an early opportunity to build on his breakout 2024-25 season, as both Joel Embiid and Paul George are in the process of recovering from respective injuries.

That should make a significant number of shots available to Grimes, thus opening the door for a revelation of his true potential.

Unfortunately, Grimes' role with the 76ers could change drastically once Embiid and George return to the rotation. The trio of Embiid, George, and Maxey projects to command significant touches and shot attempts, and Grimes could thus find it difficult to maintain a high level of volume.

Thankfully, the [Lakers are ideally equipped](https://lakeshowlife.com/painful-rui-hachimura-truth-lakers-face-season) to incorporate Grimes into their system as both a short-term and long-term asset along the wings if he decides to look for greener pastures.

Lakers should keep a close eye on 76ers wing Quentin Grimes

Los Angeles is in a similar position to Philadelphia from a short-term perspective with Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves in high-volume roles. As such, it's fair to question if Grimes would actually be an ideal addition to the rotation considering what he may be hoping for in role and fit.

The difference between the Lakers and the 76ers, however, is that there's space for Grimes to grow within the rotation as it's currently structured.

James is a high-volume superstar, but he's also 40 years of age, battling sciatica, and often rumored to be nearing retirement. Reaves, meanwhile, has yet to prove that he can act as more than the ideal tertiary option, although he deserves ample credit along those lines for his unselfishness.

Doncic is the epitome of ball dominant as a scorer and playmaker, but it's worth noting that he already has experience playing alongside Grimes with the Dallas Mavericks.

Doncic and Grimes shared the court for 468 possessions during the former's injury-plagued final half-season with the Mavericks. During that time, Dallas ranked in the 91st percentile in net rating and the 97th percentile in offensive rating.

During Grimes' time with the Mavericks, he averaged 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.7 three-point field goals made in 22.8 minutes per game on .463/.398/.765 shooting.

If Grimes can simply maintain that level of efficiency and production, the Lakers would be landing a high-level asset to either start or bring in as a sixth man. The hope is that he can emulate what he managed in 28 games with the 76ers: 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.9 three-point field goals made on .469/.373/.752 shooting.

There's reason for skepticism in that regard, but with an expiring salary of just $8.9 million, the Lakers could treat this potential trade as a low-risk, high-reward endeavor.
