Manager David Moyes has been praising the efforts of Everton fan group the 1878s who are dedicated to improving the atmosphere on matchdays
David Moyes has hailed the work of Everton fan group the 1878s. And Blues boss has stressed the importance of keeping up the energy levels at the club's new home.
A planned display ahead of Everton’s game with Tottenham Hotspur on October 26 has now been postponed by the 1878s and instead the group of seven volunteers, who in addition to their day jobs are dedicated to improving the atmosphere on matchdays, are to hold a fundraiser night in conjunction with A View From the Bullens the previous evening at Bierkeller Liverpool (Saturday October 25, 7-11:30pm).
It will help the 1878s purchase flags and banners large enough to suit the scale of a 52,769 capacity venue, which is a third bigger than the Blues’ previous home.
When speaking to the group in an interview on TNT last season, Moyes asked whether the displays would continue at the new stadium and when he was given an affirmative answer, the 62-year-old replied: “Good, because they’re required and they’re unbelievable.”
Moyes is now looking forward to seeing the new, larger banners once they’re ready.
But having been spotted taking in Boca Juniors’ 2-2 draw with Benfica at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens in June, Moyes acknowledges that all British supporters have still got plenty of work to do to catch up with some of their overseas counterparts, even if a ticker-tape welcome for Everton’s penultimate fixture at Goodison Park against Ipswich Town brought back memories of the 1978 World Cup.
Moyes said: “I looked at one of the Premier League clubs in Europe recently and I thought the stadium was immense before the game and they’d done great.
“I think it does play a big part in helping and it would be great if we could get that. The flags come down after the start, though, of course, so it’s really important that we keep the atmosphere and the energy up within the stadium.
“It’s been great at the moment and in the main, the team has done really well, which has helped that. We need to keep it big, and I hope the club keeps looking how to improve it and see how, with the supporters, we can keep the atmosphere strong.

“I saw the games at the Club World Cup and the atmosphere from the South Americans was out of this world. It would have put anything in this country to shame.
