Jerry Jones Gets Honest About Dak Prescott With Bold Cowboys Claim

Key Points

Jerry Jones called Dak Prescott "the best I've ever been around," a pretty striking statement given the Cowboys' storied history of franchise legends.

Prescott's recent hot streak has likely fueled Jones' praise.

True greatness for the Dallas Cowboys franchise is typically measured by Super Bowl wins, a milestone Prescott has yet to achieve with a career 2-5 playoff record.

Jerry Jones purchased the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 for $140 million, quickly seeing major success after hiring head coach Jimmy Johnson and proceeding to win back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993, and once again under new head coach Barry Switzer in 1995.

Of course, it took an incredible roster to accomplish such a feat, including several NFL Hall of Fame players like quarterback Troy Aikman, wide receiver Michael Irvin, and all-time leading rusher in NFL history, Emmitt Smith.

And that lofty list most certainly doesn't come close to ending there, as the Cowboys were as close to an "All-Madden"-level, video game type of team during those glory days.

But, in somewhat of a stunner, it sounds as though the play of star quarterback Dak Prescott this season has managed to eclipse them all.

Despite sporting a meager playoff record of 2-5 in his nine-year career with the Cowboys heading into the 2025 season, Prescott has apparently found a way to rise above the lengthy list of franchise legends, at least when it comes to the often times controversial and candid opinions of the 82-year-old Jones.

"He's [Prescott] the best, frankly, that I think I've ever been around," Jones told radio station 105.3 The FAN in Dallas on Friday.

While perhaps caught up in the moment of what has been an especially scorching two week stretch for Prescott-eight total touchdowns to no interceptions and 556 yards passing-Jones' followthrough quote did make plenty of sense.

"I think he's [Prescott] the reason why we all have a chance to be optimistic about this season."

With a Cowboys defense that hasn't exactly been making a whole lot of stops, the seemingly fearless Prescott and his outstanding play has been giving Dallas a fighting chance every single week, even with the absence of the team's injured No. 1 wide receiver in CeeDee Lamb.

But despite the way the 32-year-old Prescott has been playing in general, it seems relatively unnecessary for Jones to be out there dropping such monumental praise through just five games in a season where the team itself currently sports a hardly impressive record of 2-2-1.

Although some things are far easier said than done, as putting any kind of muzzle on Jones and his expressive, expensive hand gestures has proven to be next to impossible over the better part of the last 36 years.

Where Does Dak Prescott Rank All-Time Among Dallas Cowboys Quarterbacks?

Based on individual accolades alone, Prescott stands pretty tall in the storied franchise's history of celebrated quarterbacks.

The former Mississippi State Bulldogs star quarterback recently surpassed Super Bowl XXVII MVP Aikman in career completions, holds the record for 300-yard, 3-TD games at 10, and became just the second Cowboys quarterback in team history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season, throwing for a ridiculous 4,902 yards back in 2019.

While making plenty of individual team history is nothing to sneeze at, and with a lot of football likely still laying ahead for Prescott, this is the Dallas Cowboys we're talking about-a franchise whose fan base does lots and lots of judging based on Super Bowl rings.

So until a Lombardi Trophy is hoisted by Prescott, or maybe even a deep Dallas playoff run finally takes place under his watch, it's really all fans of the Cowboys will be using as the measuring stick of true franchise success.
