The San Francisco 49ers have had the misfortune of attempting to prepare for their Week 6 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with two injured quarterbacks who have uncertain availabilities leading up to the game. Unfortunately, Friday’s injury report was far from ideal for 49ers fans.
Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ Week 1 starting quarterback who continues to nurse a lingering toe injury, has consistently received less-than-ideal updates throughout the week that have alluded to the fact that he is a long shot to play on Sunday.
This has led most to assume that Mac Jones will be the starter again in Week 6 after starting in Week 5. However, this seems to be no sure thing, as Jones is dealing with an oblique and knee injury.
On Friday, an update emerged about both Jones and Purdy that provides a bit more insight into who will not be starting for San Francisco, but doesn’t exactly reveal who will be under center.
According to 49ers beat writer Matt Barrows, Brock Purdy has been ruled out for Sunday’s game, while Jones is officially listed as questionable for the game.
If Mac Jones is able to start, he will assuredly be under center for the 49ers. But if Jones joins Purdy on the list of inactives come Sunday, San Francisco will certainly find themselves in a tricky situation at the quarterback position for Week 6.
Former Nebraska standout Adrian Martinez would likely be the next man up for San Francisco, who has yet to take a snap at the NFL level after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has certainly proven to be more than capable of preparing a team without a starting quarterback under center, which has been proven by just how well Mac Jones has played this season in relief of Purdy.
With that being said, Week 6 could very well become a complete disaster if it is Martinez under center against Buccaneers star quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has quickly emerged as an MVP candidate this season.
