Divin Mubama scored his first two goals for England under-21s and was named player of the match in a 4-0 Euros qualifying romp over Moldova.

Mubama, who is on loan at Stoke City from Man City for the season, has assumed the starting berth at centre-forward for Lee Carsley's European champions thanks to his start to the season in the Championship.

He made his debut last month, setting up a goal in a win at Kazakhstan, and then got on the scoresheet himself along with Chelsea's Jamie Gittens and Man City's Rico Lewis on Friday night.

He becomes the first Stoke player to score for England under-21s since Mark Chamberlain found the net in a 3-1 win over Italy at Maine Road back in April 1984..

It isn't a long list. Adrian Heath scored in a 1-1 draw with Scotland at Maine Road in April 1982 and got two in a 3-0 win over Romania at Swindon's County Ground in April 1981. Garth Crooks scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Bulgaria at Leicester's Filbert Street in November 1979.

Mubama scored in his first two Stoke appearances, against Derby and Sheffield Wednesday, as he gets his first taste of regular senior football.

He told StokeonTrentLive last week: “It’s an unbelievable experience,” he said. “When you’re a young player around my age you want to be pushing to get into that squad. We’ve all seen what Lee Carsley has done and what this squad is capable of doing and it’s always good being in that England set-up. I’m really proud to play for my country and with the best players in my age. It’s great exposure, a top experience.”

England won the under-21s European Championships in the summer and are now on their way to booking a place at the tournament for 2027. Slovakia, Republic of Ireland and Andorra are also in their group, with the top team going through automatically and second team going into a play-off. They take on Andorra at Pride Park on Monday.
