The San Francisco 49ers have always been thought of as a team that wears red and gold, but up to this point in the 2025 season, they have mainly worn white and gold.
That is going to change this Sunday even though they are on the road.
The Niners will wear their standard red home uniform on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay decided to wear white uniforms for the game likely in anticipation of heat, which is why the 49ers will wear red.
The 49ers will actually be wearing their red home jerseys on the road at Tampa this week. The Bucs elected as the home team to wear their whites.

This is the first time the 49ers will wear their red jerseys in the regular season this year. San Francisco has already had two home games, but the team opted to wear its all-white uniform in the home opener in anticipation of heat. There was intense heat at Levi's Stadium games in 2024, so the Niners wanted to avoid a repeat of that by ensuring they had every possible advantage, real or perceived.
Sunday will only be the first of six times that the Niners wear red in the regular season this year. They were originally supposed to wear their normal road white uniform for the game, but it seems Tampa Bay was able to change it up, a luxury that was not afforded to the 49ers last season against Arizona.

In a perfect world, we would see the 49ers wear red three more times in the postseason if they were the No. 1 seed in the NFC and had home-field advantage, winning the NFC divisional game and the NFC Championship, so they could wear their home reds on their home field Levi's Stadium in the Super Bowl.
That is getting out a bit over our skis, but it doesn't hurt to dream a little bit.
Most people probably do not care about what uniforms the team will wear, but it is still interesting that it has taken this long to see the Niners wear their usual home uniform. It is even stranger that it will occur on the road but they are in Florida which is a strange place so perhaps it is altogether fitting.
The 49ers wore their home red jerseys last year when they took on the Bucs in Tampa and they took home a victory so maybe it is a good omen as San Francisco looks to improve to 5-1 on the season.
