NFL Owner Suggests Coach Should Be Fired After Sideline Meltdown

Week 5 and Week 6 saw two NFL coaches have viral meltdowns on the sideline during pressure-packed situations. New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll apologized after having a heated moment with a team doctor while quarterback Jaxson Dart was being evaluated for a concussion.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was fined $100,000 for his reaction to running back Emari Demercado fumbling the ball right before the goal line. Gannon appeared to make contact with Demercado after going on a rant.

Demercado’s mistake was costly, as the Cardinals were set to take a 28-6 lead in the fourth quarter. Instead, the Tennessee Titans scored a touchdown six plays later and ultimately won the game 22-21, dropping Arizona to 2-3 on the season.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic spoke to a few sources about the incident. One NFL owner suggested that the Cardinals should have fired Gannon if they felt his actions were worth fining the head coach $100,000.

"If you're going to fine him $100,000 because you feel that strongly, then just fire him," the owner told Russini.

Another rival executive felt Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill took away Gannon’s power to have authority over the locker room by issuing the fine.

One NFC head coach felt the issue should have been handled internally, calling Gannon’s actions a “meltdown.”

Not everyone took Gannon’s side, with a player in the NFC West saying Gannon pushing Demercado went overboard.

"Nah, you can't do that. That can change a locker room,” the player said.

Following the game, Gannon apologized to the team for his actions.

“I just told them, I kind of let the moment of what happened get the better of me there,” Gannon said via ESPN.

Sunday’s loss was the Cardinals’ third in a row. Arizona is set to play a 4-1 Indianapolis Colts team on the road in Week 6.

Gannon is 14-25 in his third season with the Cardinals.
