Haaland proves he's human by missing two penalties but still extends absurd scoring streak

Erling Haaland had a major moment to forget during Norway's crunch World Cup qualifier against Israel on Saturday.

The Manchester City striker was captaining his nation as they looked to extend their lead at the top of their qualifying group.

And it appeared as if they'd be making the perfect start to the tie in Oslo, as Patrick Berg won a penalty after just three minutes.

Haaland, of course, stepped up to take the spot-kick, having scored 52 of the previous 60 he had taken for club and country.

However, Norway's all-time top goalscorer saw his penalty saved by Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

It was a rare miss from the spot for Haaland, but his blushes were instantly spared by Peretz's error.

The goalkeeper had strayed off his line and the referee then ordered for the penalty to be retaken.

Haaland stepped up for a second time but, in astonishing scenes, missed again as Peretz dived to his right to deny the superstar.

Before this game, the 25-year-old had only ever missed one penalty for Norway, with that coming in March 2024 against Slovakia.

In total, he'd only ever missed eight in the 60 he'd taken.

But now he's managed to have two saved in a matter of moments, in a rare few seconds that showed he is, in fact, human.

Haaland's misses didn't keep him down for too long though.

Streak extended

Haaland still managed to find the net in the game, extending his own scoring streak and Norway's lead against Israel.

An own goal had put his side in front before a 27th-minute neat finish into the bottom corner made it 2-0.

Haaland wasn't done there, though.

He popped up twice in the space of nine minutes midway through the second-half to complete his hat-trick.

This was Haaland's 10th straight match he had scored in for Norway and Man City, as he proves to be as in-form as ever.

That streak started back on August 31, meaning he's now scored in every game he's played in for well over a month.

He has not just scored one in all of those games either, netting 19 times across the 10-fixture scoring run.

That includes five in one match for Norway against Moldova in September and three doubles in the Premier League.

Norway's World Cup qualifiers

Norway are already closing in on a place in the 2026 World Cup, with their spot almost secured if they beat Israel.

They sit nine points clear of Italy at the time of writing, winning every single qualifier of this campaign.

Their tally of 18 points and a goal difference of +24 sees them in a very strong position to be playing in the USA next summer.

Norway beat Moldova 5-0, Israel 4-2, Italy 3-0 and Estonia 1-0 throughout the March and June international breaks.

An 11-1 thrashing of Moldova occurred in September and now another win over Israel will put them on the brink.

Haaland has never played in a World Cup before, and it seems the Man City superstar is set to finally appear in the tournament.
