In the EFL Championship this season, only one of the recently relegated three sides from the Premier League sits in the top eight.

Leicester City are third, Ipswich Town are ninth, and Southampton are 17th.

Ipswich had a tough start to the season, failing to win one of their opening five league matches, but they hit a turning point in their sixth game of the campaign.

Promotion-chasing Sheffield United visited Ipswich’s Portman Road, with both sides needing three points to kickstart their seasons.

The home side were the winners of the clash, emphatically beating the Blades 5-0. The win proved to be a turning point for the relegated outfit.

Following a tricky August for Ipswich Town, September proved to be pivotal for them.

Their away match against Blackburn Rovers was abandoned with 10 minutes to play, and the away side were leading the game 1-0. Despite this, the match is set to be replayed in full at a later date.

A 2-1 win at home against Portsmouth was followed by a draw away against Bristol City, ahead of the East Anglia Derby vs Norwich City.

Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, guided his side to a 3-1 derby day win against Norwich last week, to begin October in the best way possible. McKenna’s side are unbeaten in four and that has seen him earn the EFL Championship Manager of the Month award for September.

The 39-year-old was Manchester United’s assistant manager during four managers’ tenures at Old Trafford, between 2018 and 2021. After Ole Gunnar Solksjær was sacked, McKenna’s next managerial job was Ipswich, where he remains today.

He guided the club from League One football all the way up to the Premier League, before returning to the second-tier after relegation last season. Despite the disappointment of last campaign, Ipswich are impressed with McKenna, who was linked with Manchester United before Ruben Amorim took charge.
