Mikel feared injured, Babayaro subbed in as Chelsea Legends lose to Liverpool again

For the second time in 2025, Chelsea Legends lost to Liverpool Legends in a charity match, with Saturday's encounter taking place at Stamford Bridge, **allnigeriasoccer.com** reports.

Chelsea Legends manager Roberto Di Matteo named John Obi Mikel in his starting lineup, while retired Nigerian international Celestine Babayaro came on as a substitute at half-time.

Mikel, wearing his iconic number 12 jersey from his eleven-year spell at Chelsea, formed part of a midfield trio alongside Claude Makelele and Ramires.

The former Super Eagles captain appeared to have picked up a knock and was forced off before the second half began, having earlier received treatment and seen stretching his hamstring.

In the first half, Yossi Benayoun tested Petr Cech early, while John Terry, Ramires and Diego Costa spearheaded Chelsea's attacking efforts.

After the interval, Eden Hazard impressed, with the Belgian nearly scoring before Liverpool's substitute goalkeeper Westerveld produced a fine save.

With just three minutes remaining, Ryan Babel secured victory for the Reds, cutting inside onto his right foot and curling a low effort into the bottom corner.

Babayaro holds the distinction of being Chelsea's first African player, following his move from Belgian giants Anderlecht in 1997.
