ALLEN PARK -- Par for the course, the NFL released its list of fines from the previous week on Saturday afternoon, and appearing on it for the Detroit Lions is one of their key red zone contributors.
The league fined Lions tight end Brock Wright $11,883 for unnecessary roughness, classifying it under _striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing_ during the team’s 37-24 Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. No other Lions were fined this week.
With 14:04 remaining in regulation, the Lions faced 2nd-and-9 from their own 28-yard line. As quarterback Jared Goff dropped back, Wright stepped up in pass protection but was unable to hold off Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who got home for the sack.
On video, Wright’s foot appears to connect with Hendrickson’s leg just before the sack. No flag was thrown on the play, and as of now, there is no word on whether Wright plans to appeal the fine.
Wright, who has been with the Lions since 2021, has largely kept his nose clean throughout his career, committing only eight penalties -- most for false starts.
In fact, this marks the first time he has been fined by the NFL.
Last week against Cincinnati, Wright helped Detroit build a commanding lead in the second quarter, catching a three-yard touchdown pass from David Montgomery to make it 14-0 following a Jake Bates extra point.
Through five games this season, Wright has five receptions for 37 yards and two touchdowns, putting him on pace to surpass last year’s totals and post a career-best campaign.
At this rate, ESPN projects Wright could finish with 126 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
