Arizona Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett will start vs. Indianapolis Colts.
The Indianapolis Colts host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium. The 4-1 Colts should be able to hold serve at home against the 2-3 Cardinals, who will likely be without starting quarterback Kyler Murray.
On Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that Murray has been dealing with a foot injury and his status was up in the air.
“Big questions in Arizona surrounding their quarterback, Kyler Murray, who’s dealing with a foot injury,” Schefter said on Thursday morning’s Get Up. “Didn’t practice yesterday. They’re saying he’s day-to-day. He came back in and finished the game against Tennessee, so that usually is a sign that a player is able to play the next week. But, if he can’t, Jacoby Brissett would come on and start against his former Colts team in Indianapolis this weekend.”
Well, now Schefter says that Brissett is indeed expected to be under center Sunday.
“Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett is expected to start Sunday in place of Kyler Murray, who is dealing with a foot injury, per me and @JFowlerESPN,” Schefter posted on X. “Brissett will make his first start for the Cardinals against the Colts, a team he played for from 2017-2020.”
Jacoby Brissett has had quite the NFL journey
Brissett was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2016 and is about a Steve DeBerg short of being Josh Johnson. After a season with the Patriots, Brissett spent four years with the Colts, then was with the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders, Patriots again and now he’s landed with the Cardinals.
Brissett will be picking up the hot torch of a three-game losing streak when he faces his old team.
That might be great news for Colts fans, because Brissett started five games for the Patriots last year, going 1-4 while completing 59.0% of his passes for 826 yards, two touchdown passes and one interception.
Jacoby Brissett could start more than just the Colts game
While Murray will miss Sunday’s Colts game, he could actually be out longer than that. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport used the dreaded L-word when referring to his foot injury.
“Kyler Murray’s injury, a mid-foot sprain, is a version of a Lisfranc injury, source said,” Rapoport posted on X. “There is a possibility Murray is out more than this week, as pushing it can cause an aggravation.”
Lisfranc injuries are no joke and can be a serious problem. The first time I remember hearing the term was when running back Errict Rhett suffered the injury with the Cleveland Browns in 2000; it was the end of his career.
“Lisfranc (midfoot) injuries result if bones in the midfoot are broken or the ligaments that support the midfoot are torn,” writes Ortho Info. “Midfoot fracture dislocations are named after French surgeon Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin, who served in the Napoleonic army in the 1800s and observed midfoot injuries in cavalry soldiers.
“The severity of a Lisfranc injury can vary widely — from a simple injury involving one midfoot joint to a complex injury involving many midfoot joints and broken bones.”
The Cardinals also signed quarterback Kedon Slovis from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, but that really won’t matter if Murray is out for a prolonged period of time.
