Opinion: AC Milan could regret not selling Mike Maignan to Chelsea after development that will anger fans

During the summer, Chelsea tried to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan but could not agree a fee with the Italian club.

Entering the final year of his contract at the San Siro, the goalkeeper was available. It was reported that Milan wanted just £25m for Maignan.

However, it was a fee that Chelsea clearly felt was too high, given his contract situation, and a deal was never struck.

Not doing business with the Club World Cup winners is a decision that Milan could now come to regret.

AC Milan could now lose Mike Maignan to rivals Juventus for nothing

Not only are Milan now at serious risk of losing Maignan for nothing, but they could be forced to watch him join their rivals Juventus.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are now considering signing the 30-year-old on a free transfer next summer.

The thought of losing one of their star players to the Old Lady and not receiving a single penny will irk Milan supporters.

If Maignan’s heart really is set on leaving the San Siro, Milan supporters would surely prefer it if he moved to another division like the Premier League.

It is still possible, with Chelsea still in the picture. The Chelsea Chronicle understands that Chelsea’s interest in Maignan has not gone away.

Mike Maignan makes decision on future

Whether Maignan ends up at Chelsea, Juventus or somewhere else remains to be seen. But what is clear is the player’s desire to leave Milan and try something new.

It is thought that Maignan has already decided to depart Milan at the end of his contract, which expires next June.

If Chelsea do not sign Maignan, they are likely to stick with Robert Sanchez or give Mike Penders an opportunity.

The youngster is currently on loan at Strasbourg and impressing there. Penders is rated extremely highly at Chelsea and could get his chance next season should Maignan join Juventus or another club.
