BROWNS - STEELERS Matchup Preview
After a hotly contested matchup throughout the London Game, the Browns (1-4) allowed a game-winning drive to the Minnesota Vikings as one of the league’s best defenses crumbled in the final minutes.
Cleveland has lost two straight games since their stunning victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 2.
Today’s game will mark the second start for rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. He has 209 passing yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked twice last week in London.
Cleveland shook up its quarterback room once again, sending veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to the QB-needy Cincinnati Bengals for a fifth-round pick.
After some midweek speculation, Shedeur Sanders was officially named the backup quarterback for today’s game.
After finishing sixth in the NFL in total yards, receiver Jerry Jeudy continues to have a head-scratching campaign with 15 receptions for 197 yards. He is averaging 13.1 yards per reception, but had a slew of drops and miscues.
Rookie running back Quinshon Judkins continues to show why he is the future in the backfield. He has 72 carries for 347 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He averages 2.6 yards per attempt after contact. Judkins has over 82 rushing yards in three of his four games this season, including a 110-yard performance in London.
Cleveland is tied with the Tennessee Titans for the lowest points per game in the NFL through four games, averaging 14.6 points per game.
The defense took a hit last week, leaving defensive coordinator Greg Schwartz frustrated at a missed opportunity to continue the narrative build in the opening weeks of the season.
They will do it without coverage corner Greg Newsome, who was swapped with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Tyson Campbell this week. Campbell has 22 solo tackles and one forced fumble.
Defensive end Myles Garrett, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, has four sacks with 14 solo tackles. Rookie LB Carson Schwesinger has a team-high 44 tackles with one sack. Pro Bowler Denzel Ward has 10 solo tackles with one interception and four pass deflections.
Taking away their AFC wildcard victory in 2021, the Browns have not defeated the Steelers in Pittsburgh since 2003. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin holds a 27-8-1 all-time record against Cleveland.
