Not much offense for Browns. Field goals are the difference – Terry Pluto Halftime Scribbles

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Scribbles in my notebook as the Steelers lead the Browns 9-3 at the half.

1\. The Browns offense was … well … not much. A drive near the end of the half led to a Andre Szmyt 31-yard field goal for Cleveland’s only points.

2\. Gabriel was 13 for 18 passing for 92 yards. Lots of short passes. He also was sacked three times. He avoided turnovers. But the offense also didn’t move much.

3\. Before the game, Pittsburgh Coach Mike Tomlin compared Quinshon Judkins to Nick Chubb, at least in some ways. Tomlin loaded up the line of scrimmage to stop Judkins. It worked. He had 14 yards in six carries.

4\. Chris Boswell has been Pittsburgh’s kicker for the last 11 seasons. He’s made 88% of his career field goal attempts. Since the start of the 2023 season, it’s 92%. Boswell made a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter. He had three field goals in the first half.

5\. I couldn’t resist. I wanted to know how many kickers the Browns have had in that 11-year span. I didn’t count guys such as Riley Patterson, who kicked in only one game. Counting 2025 Browns kicker Andre Szmyt is the 10th in that span. Some of the names from the past include Cody Parkey, Greg Joseph, Travis Coons and Britton Colquitt.

6\. Pittsburgh’s first field goal was set up with a broken coverage on the part of the Browns. Tight end Darnell Washington was wide open for a 36-yard catch. Newcomer Tyson Campbell ran down Washington from behind. He was not Palmer’s responsibility on that play.

7\. Cam Robinson started at left tackle. He’s the fourth different player to start at that spot. Yes, this is only game six.

8\. In the first quarter, Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy drew a personal foul penalty for taking a swing at a Steeler. A few plays later, Jeudy dropped a pass. He came into the day tied for the NFL lead with five drops. So it’s now six in five games.

9\. Former Brown Jabrill Peppers was cut by New England before the season. Pittsburgh signed him. In the first quarter, he was flagged for a blind-side block on a punt return and also for illegal use of hands on defense. The safety is playing 20% of the snaps on defense this season for Pittsburgh.

1. The Steelers also have former Brown Juan Thornhill in their secondary.

11\. Boswell drilled a 50-yard field goal early in the second quarter. He is 3 for 3 on field goals from at least 50 yards this season. Boswell kept kicking. He made a 48-yarder with 3:38 left in the third quarter.
