Scotland are on the verge of heading to the FIFA World Cup next year, following their win and Greece’s loss to Denmark this evening. Both Scotland and Denmark, who are first and second respectively in group C of the European qualifying groups, have booked their spots in the 2026 World Cup qualifying play-offs at the very least. The two sides will battle it out in the final group stage game to see who finishes first to guarantee a spot in the tournament, while second place will feature in the play-offs.
Scotland took on Belarus at Hampden Park, while Denmark hosted Greece in Copenhagen today. For Steve Clarke’s Scotland to secure a top-two finish tonight, his side needed to win while Greece needed to lose. Both of those things happened, and one former Manchester United midfielder was at the heart of the Tartan Army’s success tonight.
The Scots won their away match against Belarus and won the reverse fixture tonight. Che Adams scored Scotland’s first, while former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay scored the second.
28-year-old McTominay is one of two Scottish midfielders at Napoli, with Billy Gilmour being the other. The United academy graduate has been instrumental to his nation’s recent glory. During the Euro 2024 qualifying stages, MctTominay scored seven goals, placing him joint-fifth in the top scorer race during the qualifiers.
Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu started on the bench for Denmark against Greece, while Rasmus Højlund, who is on loan at Napoli from Old Trafford, started the match.
Højlund, who is McTominay’s teammate at Napoli, opened the scoring for his nation against Greece. Denmark made easy work of Greece, as the side were 3-0 up at half-time, scoring two goals in two minutes. The full-time result was 3-1 to Denmark. The win for the Scandinavian nation means that they, like Scotland, are up to 10 points and will finish in the top two of Group C.
Scotland and Denmark face each other at Hampden Park next month, and while both teams have completed their targets of reaching the World Cup, bragging rights and top spot could be up for grabs in the group.
