Detroit Lions mascot scheduled to visit Chippewa Valley High School

Students from Chippewa Valley Schools in Clinton Township will kick off National School Lunch Week this week with a visit from Roary, the official mascot of the Detroit Lions.

Roary is expected to visit principal Todd Distelrath and the school campus on 19 Mile Road, just west of Romeo Plank Road, during the lunch hour starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13.

According to the Detroit Lions webpage, Roary has been named the NFL’s Pro Bowl mascot in 2013, 2017 and 2019. He’s undefeated in staring contests, the page states.

In addition to Roary’s visit, students will take in a live DJ performance and a chef hosting cooking demonstrations sponsored by the United Dairy Industry of Michigan.

Universal free school meals were kept in the state budget that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed last week. The package retaining all state students who are eligible for free daily breakfast and lunch program was approved by Michigan lawmakers.

As the seventh largest school district in the state, Chippewa Valley Schools served over 1.2 million student lunches last school year, according to school officials.
