Via On3:
“UAB has fired coach Trent Dilfer on a day in which multiple other college football coaches were canned, according to a report from On3's Pete Nakos. Dilfer had led the Blazers to a 2-4 start to the season in his third year in charge.
The team dropped its third straight contest on Saturday, falling to Florida Atlantic 53-33. The loss dropped UAB to 0-3 in conference play.”
Dilfer took over the job at UAB in 2023. He went 4-8 in his first year with the Blazers and 3-9 in 2024. He will leave the program 9-21 overall and 5-14 in AAC play.
The UAB gig was Dilfer’s first coaching experience at the college level. He previously coached for four seasons in high school at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. He went 44-10 at Lipscomb and won two national championships.
Dilfer was well known for his NFL career. The former Fresno State quarterback was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 6 pick in the 1994 draft.
Dilfer led the Baltimore Ravens to a win in Super Bowl XXXV over the New York Giants. He made stops with the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.
Dilfer threw for 20,518 yards, 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions during his 13-year career. He earned a Pro Bowl appearance in 1997.
