QB comparison: Lions quarterback Jared Goff was pretty accurate all night, completing 23 of his 29 passes. He finished with 203 passing yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 118.8 rating.
Goff had a touchdown reception from running back David Montgomery taken off the board on Detroit's opening drive by an illegal motion penalty on the trick play where Goff motioned from under center out wide before receiving a pass from Montgomery.
"He takes a position behind the center. He's got to step back and pause for a second and establish as a back before he goes in motion," NBC's rules analyst Terry McAulay explained on the game broadcast. "He didn't. He stayed in motion."
The Lions were forced to kick a field goal.
Mahomes fished 22-of-30 passing for 257 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 132.2 rating. He also rushed seven times for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Big moment: Campbell went for a 4th & 2 at the Chiefs' 45-yard line with just under three minutes left in the first half. Offensive coordinator John Morton dialed up a good call to get Amon-Ra St. Brown enough separation to convert the first down, but St. Brown couldn't hang on to it. It was his first drop of the season.
Kansas City took the following drive 55 yards in eight plays capped off by a Mahomes 1-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds left in the half to take a 13-10 lead.
The Chiefs received the second-half kickoff and marched 81 yards in eight plays capped off by a Mahomes to Brown 9-yard touchdown to take a 20-10 lead.
Instead of potentially taking a two-score lead, the Lions found themselves down two scores in the third quarter.
Key stat: The Chiefs racked up 26 first downs in the contest as the Lions' defense just couldn't come up with a big stop in the second half to turn the tide. Detroit finished with 18 first downs.
Injury report: Lions safety Kerby Joseph was questionable coming in but was active and did start. He left briefly in the second quarter because of the knee injury but did return and finished with four tackles.
