State NFL roundup: Former Troy star shines in his first start for Chargers

With running backs Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton on injured reserve, the Los Angeles Chargers signed former Troy standout Kimani Vidal from their practice squad for their active roster in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

In his second NFL season, Vidal had played in two games as a practice-squad elevation this season and had four rushing attempts for 18 yards and one reception for 1 yard.

But in his first NFL start on Sunday, Vidal ran for 124 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 14 yards and one touchdown in a 29-27 victory over the Dolphins.

Vidal caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Herbert as the Chargers took a 23-13 lead with 3:55 left in the third quarter.

Entering Sunday’s game, Vidal had 173 yards on 47 rushing attempts and 63 yards and one touchdown on six receptions in 12 games since joining Los Angeles in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Vidal was among the 26 players from Alabama high schools and colleges (excluding Alabama and Auburn) who got on the field on the sixth Sunday of the NFL’s 106th season.

Three other former state players were involved in the Los Angeles-Miami game:

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (West Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Chargers cornerback Jordan Oladokun (Samford) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Dolphins offensive tackle Kadeem Telfort (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible play.

In the other Sunday games:

Denver Broncos 13, New York Jets 11

Broncos cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine (Spanish Fort) made one tackle on special teams. He tackled New York running back Kene Nwangwu at the Denver 24-yard line at the end of a 72-yard kickoff return to save a touchdown.

Jets wide receiver Jamaal Pritchett (Jackson, South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Jets linebacker Quincy Williams (Wenonah) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Los Angeles Rams 17, Baltimore Ravens 3

Rams outside linebacker Jamil Muhammad (James Clemens) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Ravens offensive tackle Carson Vinson (Alabama A&M) was designated as a game-day inactive.

Darious Williams (UAB) started at cornerback for the Rams. Williams made four tackles and broke up two passes.

Carolina Panthers 30, Dallas Cowboys 27

Cowboys cornerback Trikweze Bridges (Lanett) did not record any stats.

Mike Jackson (Spain Park) started at cornerback for the Panthers. Jackson made five tackles and broke up one pass.

Shemar James (Faith Academy) started at linebacker for the Cowboys. James led Dallas with 11 tackles in his third NFL game after making 15 in his second last week.

George Pickens (Hoover) started at wide receiver for the Cowboys. Pickens had nine receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown. Pickens scored on a 34-yard pass from quarterback Dak Prescott as Dallas took a 24-20 lead with 2:38 left in the third quarter. Pickens set a career single-game high for receptions and posted his second-most receiving yards in a game on Saturday.

Cowboys defensive back Reddy Steward (Austin, Troy) made five tackles and forced one fumble, which Carolina recovered.

Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Cowboys. Tolbert had an 8-yard reception.

Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) made four tackles.

Indianapolis Colts 31, Arizona Cardinals 27

Colts running back Ameer Abdullah (Homewood) had a 7-yard run and a 9-yard reception. Indianapolis elevated Abdullah from its practice squad to make him eligible to play.

Colts quarterback Riley Leonard (Fairhope) dressed for the game but did not play. The game was the rookie’s first as Indianapolis’ backup quarterback. He stepped up behind Daniel Jones with Anthony Richardson sidelined by an eye ailment.

Cardinals wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Cardinals cornerback Starling Thomas V (Ramsay, UAB) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Colts safety Trey Washington (Hewitt-Trussville) did not record any stats.

Seattle Seahawks 20, Jacksonville Jaguars 12

Jaguars quarterback Carter Bradley (South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Seahawks safety A.J. Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Josh Hines-Allen (Abbeville) started at defensive end for the Jaguars. Hines-Allen made three tackles and recorded two tackles for loss.

Jaguars tight end Qadir Ismail (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Jaguars quarterback Nick Mullens (Spain Park) dressed for the game but did not play.

Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) started at cornerback for the Partriots. Jones made five tackles, recorded the first sack of his NFL career, broke up three passes and returned a punt 6 yards.

Saints running back Velus Jones Jr. (Saraland) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Patriots safety Dell Pettus (Sparkman, Troy) made one tackle on special teams.

Patriots wide receiver Jeremiah Webb (South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Pittsburgh Steelers 23, Cleveland Browns 9

Mohamoud Diabate (Auburn High) started at linebacker for the Browns. Diabate made two tackles in his first start of the season.

Browns safety Christopher Edmonds (Samford) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Quinshon Judkins (Pike Road) started at running back for the Browns. Judkins ran for 36 yards on 12 carries.

Browns linebacker Nathaniel Watson (Maplesville) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Steelers punter Corliss Waitman (South Alabama) averaged 42.0 yards on two punts, with a 37.5-yard net. Waitman had a 34-yard punt that went out of bounds at the Cleveland 29-yard line and a 50-yarder returned 9 yards to the Cleveland 25.

Alex Wright (Elba, UAB) started at defensive end for the Browns. Wright made a career-high seven tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

Bengals defensive end Cedric Johnson (Davidson) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

Bengals kicker Evan McPherson (Fort Payne) made a 45-yard field goal and one extra point. He came up short on a 67-yard field-goal attempt on the final snap of the first half and was wide right on a 56-yard attempt with 41 seconds to play.

Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt (Park Crossing) made four tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30, San Francisco 49ers 19

Forty-Niners defensive end Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) recorded one tackle for loss.

Tez Johnson (Pinson Valley, Troy) started at wide receiver for the Buccaneers. Johnson caught a 45-yard pass from quarterback Baker Mayfield for the first touchdown of his NFL career. The seventh-round rookie’s TD put Tampa Bay ahead 27-19 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

Lions wide receiver Malik Cunningham (Park Crossing) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Lions linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) was designated as a game-day inactive. A hamstring injury kept Cunningham off the field.
