The Dallas Cowboys lost another game, and their defense was yet again the reason why. The Cowboys allowed the Carolina Panthers to score 30 points en route to their third loss of the season (2-3-1 overall).
It was a brutal game for Dallas, and it's become crystal clear that Matt Eberflus isn't the guy for this defense.
The Cowboys were right in it until the end, but a crucial first down conversion on 4th-and-3 for the Panthers was what helped Carolina kick the eventual game-winning field goal. On that particular play, DaRon Bland was lined up in a terrible spot, allowing Hunter Renfrow plenty of space to make the catch. This is one of many instances Cowboys fans could pick out and use as fuel to can Eberflus but it also happens to be the most recent.
It's time for the Cowboys to end the Matt Eberflus experiment
As we all know, it wasn't just this game that the Dallas defense was atrocious. According to Ed Werder, "The Cowboys are the only team in the NFL scoring 30 points per game and allowing 30 points per game."
That stat takes all of this to another level because this offense is doing amazing things that are being wasted. After all, this dumpster fire of a defense can't stop anybody (except the Jets, who are the worst team in the NFL, so we're not giving the Cowboys credit for what they did to them).
It's hard to win games in the NFL when the defense can't get stops and that's exactly what Cowboys fans are living through right now. Even head coach Brian Schottenheimer didn't seem too convinced that the players were buying into the defensive scheme following the game, saying "I would hope so. I would think so," when asked that very question.
If the head coach is showing pause there, that shows that he's not even confident in this unit turning things around. If a defense is shaky throughout the first few weeks of the season, it's not panic time but we're now six games into the 2025 regular season, and the Dallas defense looks even worse. This problem isn't going away, and it likely won't until the Cowboys kick Eberflus to the curb and start fresh at defensive coordinator.
This offense is too special to waste, but the Cowboys are doing exactly that.
