Bengals checked in with retired Pro Bowl quarterback before making surprise trade for Joe Flacco, per report

The Bengals were so desperate for help that they actually called to check in on one quarterback who’s actually retired, and that’s four-time Pro Bowler Derek Carr. The 34-year-old announced his retirement back in May, but he left the door slightly open for a possible return if he found the right situation. Although Carr is retired, he’s still under contract with the Saints, so if the Bengals wanted to add him, they would have had to make a deal with New Orleans.

“Well, I thought as an offense we settled in, you know probably sometime in the second quarter. And I thought that we were able to get over the hump in that quarter but we came out and played a good second half. But usually against a good football team, playing one good half isn’t going to be good enough. But we gave ourselves a chance there at the end and did some good things but just not enough early on.”
