Liverpool and Chelsea in race to sign Ligue 1 star

Premier League champions Liverpool will hope to return to winning ways when they face Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds started the defence of their top flight crown with five straight victories, but defeats against both Crystal Palace and Chelsea in recent weeks have seen Arne Slot’s side leapfrogged by Arsenal.

With the Merseyside outfit having spent heavily on new signings over the summer, Slot will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways against the Red Devils at Anfield on Sunday.

Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were all among the new arrivals at Anfield over the summer, although it is arguably only Ekitike who has seriously impressed in the early weeks of the new season.

In the meantime, however, it has emerged that Liverpool are once again in the mix to sign one of Europe’s most highly rated young stars.

As per CaughtOffside, both Liverpool and Premier League rivals Chelsea are in the race to sign Lyon star Malick Fofana.

The report claims that the two English sides are both showing interest in the Belgian, who has been in sensational form for his club side over the past 12 months.

Since joining Lyon from Belgian side Gent last year, Fofana has scored 17 goals and registered eight assists in 71 matches across all competitions.

The 20-year-old winger has already scored twice in seven Ligue 1 matches so far this term, but the report suggests that he looks increasingly likely to leave Lyon next year.

Fofana’s current contract with the Ligue 1 side is set to run until the end of the 2027/28 season, although his representatives are said to be seeking a big move at the end of the current campaign.
