Everton midfielder James Garner has set himself a target of being in the mix for next summer’s World Cup squad.
The Birkenhead-born player has yet to receive a senior call up, but has represented England at youth level.
Indeed, he was a key player in Lee Carsley’s side who lifted the U21 European Championships in 2023.
Garner played at right-back throughout that competition, a position he has occasionally filled for the Toffees.
However, he has been superb in the middle of the park for David Moyes this season, as he matures into a composed midfielder.
Despite competition for places, Garner states that he’s eager to impress Thomas Tuchel ahead of next summer’s tournament.
He said: “I think that’s every English boy’s dream – to play for the national team. There’s a lot of competition and I’m not naive enough to say I should be in the team.
“But at the same time, I do think I’ve had a good start to the season and ultimately that is my goal for this season, to get there or thereabouts with the England squad.”
GARNER HAS BEEN A KEY PLAYER FOR DAVID MOYES SO FAR THIS SEASON. COULD HE DO IT AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL?
One aspect of Garner’s game that could work in his favour is his versatility, having already featured in various roles this season.
With injuries to Vitalii Mykolenko and Adam Aznou, Garner has played at left-back when called upon.
National squads always need utility players during competitions, and Garner potentially fits the bill for Tuchel’s side.
It is a sentiment echoed by the 24-year-old.
“I think it definitely plays in my favour,” he said. “I am very versatile. I can play pretty much every single position – I have played pretty much every single position for this club apart from striker and centre-back!
“That could definitely play in my favour. But ultimately for me, it’s just to keep on playing consistently well, winning games on a weekend, showing that I am a natural winner and a half-decent player.”
Personally, I don’t like our players receiving a call up to the England squad. Invariably, it results in that player suddenly wanting away.
However, Garner’s form has been impressive and he should certainly be in the conversation for Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
It’s a testament to his recent progress and the midfielder certainly has the right mentality in setting high standards.
Another top performance at Manchester City at the weekend wouldn’t do his chances any harm.
