Sverre Nypan’s return to Middlesbrough after international duty has been delayed, as he received a promotion to the senior Norway squad.
Manchester City loanee Nypan was called up to the Norway under-21 squad during this month’s break, and captained his country as they lost 4-1 in a friendly against Spain on Friday evening. That had been due to be his only game of this camp.
That would have meant an early return to Teesside for the 18-year-old, as Rob Edwards’ side gear up for the visit of Ipswich Town on Friday evening. Instead, Nypan’s return to Teesside has been delayed, with the young midfield star offered a chance to earn his first senior cap in a friendly against New Zealand on Tuesday evening in Oslo.
The promotion for the Boro loan star comes after the decision was made to allow a number of senior stars to leave camp early and return to their clubs, including Man City star Erling Haaland. The striker scored a hat-trick as Norway beat Israel 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
A statement from the Norway FA explained: “Sebastian Sebulonsen is in the Norwegian national team squad, he and Sverre Nypan are participating in today’s training. Players with particularly tight match schedules are returning home: Alexander Sorloth, Julian Ryerson, Erling Braut Haaland and Fredrik Bjorkan. Felix Horn Myhre is leaving the squad due to a sore ankle.”
Nypan, who has a made a positive early impression on Teesside without truly making a massive impact yet, could earn his first cap for his country, aged just 18. A huge talent long-since expected to achieve big things in the game, he joined Man City from Rosenborg in a £12.5 million deal. He was then loaned to Boro for the season, with the idea of learning English football.
David Strelec plays his final match of this international window on Monday evening for Slovakia, while Sontje Hansen will represent Curacao in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time. The games could impact Rob Edwards' thinking as he considers his selection for Friday's clash with Ipswich.
