Kansas City takes down the Lions 30-17 and hands Detroit its second loss of the season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WILX) - Kansas City was too much to handle for the Lions on Sunday Night Football, with the Chiefs beating Detroit 30-17.

Detroit had a long drive to open the game that ended with a field goal from Jake Bates after the Lions had a Jared Goff touchdown catch called back for illegal motion.

Kansas City answered right back on its next drive with Patrick Mahomes hitting Xavier Worthy for the six-yard touchdown reception to give the Chiefs a 6-3 lead after the PAT was missed.

The Lions’ next drive was capped off with a Goff-to-Jameson Williams touchdown to give Detroit back a 10-6 lead in the second quarter.

Detroit’s Thomas Harper made a great defensive play on the Chiefs’ following drive, breaking up Mahomes’ pass, and Kansas City turned it over on downs.

The Lions did the same thing on their next drive, with Goff not being able to complete his pass attempt to Amon-Ra St. Brown to turn it over on downs.

Kansas City then capitalized on it as Mahomes scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown to give the Chiefs a 13-10 lead late in the first half.

Detroit had to punt, and KC took a 13-10 lead to halftime.

The Chiefs start out the second half with a drive capped off with a Hollywood Brown 9-yard touchdown reception to grow Kansas City’s lead to 20-10.

Both teams would punt on their next drives to send it to the fourth quarter.

Detroit would start the fourth quarter with Goff hitting Sam LaPorta in the back of the end zone for a four-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 20-17.

KC kept things rolling on the offensive side of the ball with Mahomes hitting Brown for the second time in the game for a touchdown, and the Chiefs jumped out to a 27-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

Detroit had to punt on its following drive to give KC right back the football with just over seven minutes left in the game. The Chiefs ran it down to just over two minutes left and tacked on a field goal to take a 30-17 lead.

The Lions will get an extra day of rest and next host Tampa Bay on Oct. 20 for Monday Night Football.
