Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells once famously said, “You are what your record says you are.” The 2025 Dallas Cowboys better hope that’s accurate because after yesterday’s embarrassing loss to the Carolina Panthers, even a mediocre 2-3-1 record feels a bit too complimentary.
If you didn’t watch the game and only checked the score after it was over, it might be difficult to understand how bad Dallas looked yesterday by losing 30-27 thanks to a last-second Carolina field goal. But for those who watched the game, however, it was difficult to understand how the Cowboys only lost by three points, thanks to the way in which the team’s run defense seemingly failed to suit up for the game.
Former Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle, who the team let slip away in free agency in the offseason, absolutely dominated his old team 239 total yards from scrimmage, with over 180 of those gained primarily by running straight through the Cowboys’ defensive front. It was the second week in a row that a less-than-great team made the Cowboys’ run defense look silly. And for those who may not recall, improving the run defense was one of the hilariously made-up reasons team owner and GM Jerry Jones said that the shocking pre-season trade of Micah Parsons was necessary.
Quarterback Dak Prescott had another impressive game, but with his offense missing several starters, including key linemen and weapons like star receiver CeeDee Lamb, simply being impressive wasn’t enough. He seems to be this year’s candidate for “guy that could be MVP if the rest of his team wasn’t horrible,” similar to Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow last season.
Of course, the Cowboys, similar to the New York Yankees in baseball and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, are the most polarizing team in the NFL. As many people despise them as adore them, so when they take an L they shouldn’t have taken, the internet has a good bit of fun at their expense.
