Former NFL MVP explains why Drake Maye ‘living up to everything’ Patriots could have asked for

Drake Maye continues to draw high praise from those around the NFL.

The Patriots quarterback impressed again in Week 6 en route to New England’s 25-19 win over the New Orleans Saints to move to 4-2 on the season.

Despite a controversial call that negated a 61-yard touchdown pass to Pop Douglas, Maye rebounded and didn’t let the late flag dictate the rest of the game.

“Really impressive, almost 70 percent passing,” former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason said on WEEI on Monday. “Again, no turnovers, that’s the key. He’s throwing the ball down the field. I mean, a couple of these throws down the field are really spectacular. You are getting these big plays.”

Maye‘s sophomore season has been one for the history books, and he put his name in elite company on Sunday when he joined Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott and Dan Marino as quarterback’s 23 years old or younger with at least 200 passing yards and 100+ passer rating in five straight games.

“I can’t say enough about the way the kid is playing,” Esiason said. “He’s absolutely living up to everything they could have expected him to live up to. ... This is a team on the rise and a lot has to do with Drake Maye’s ascendancy to one of the better quarterbacks in the league.”

After Sunday’s win, the Patriots sit in second place in the AFC East. Should the Buffalo Bills lose to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday, New England would move to first place.

In a new era with Mike Vrabel as coach, Josh McDaniels as the offensive coordinator and a slew of new faces, many wondered just how the Patriots would look this season.

Maye continues to grow each week and find chemistry with Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte while Vrabel continues to help build an identity for a team that is coming off consecutive 4-13 seasons.
