Report: NFL suspends Brian Branch for punch on Juju Smith-Schuster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A postgame scuffle at the end of Sunday night’s Kansas City Chiefs victory has resulted in a suspension.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Lions safety Brian Branch has been suspended one game without pay after he punched Chiefs wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster during the final seconds of Kansas City’s 30-17 win.

“Your aggressive, non-football act was entirely unwarranted, posed a serious risk of injury, and clearly violated the standards of conduct and sportsmanship expected of NFL players,” said Jon Runyan, NFL’s VP of Football Operations. “Your conduct reflected poorly on the NFL and has no place in our game.”

Branch had been fined several times throughout his career and now has been suspended for his conduct, which resulted in a bloody nose for Smith-Schuster and involved Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco as well.

A postgame scuffle broke out at the end of the Chiefs' victory over the Lions.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell was critical of Branch postgame.

“Let me start with this, I love Brian Branch, but what he did is inexcusable and it’s not gonna be accepted here,” Campbell said. “It’s not what we do here, it’s not going to be OK. He knows it. the team knows it, so that’s not what we do.”

Branch will miss Detroit’s Week 7 game, which will be played Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, unless he appeals the suspension.

It’s unclear if Smith-Schuster or Pacheco will receive fines for their roles in the incident.
