Jaguars' division foe just hit the peak of dysfunction out of nowhere

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made notable progress early in the Liam Coen era. However, they still have their work cut out, especially after the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, to have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Then again, the Jags are currently in much better shape than one of their AFC South rivals.

Six weeks into the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Tennessee Titans made the decision to kick head coach Brian Callahan to the curb. Several outlets confirmed the news. The move came in the aftermath of the loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Titans are pressing the reset button again... again

The Titans were the top team in the AFC Sout late in the 2010s and early in the 2020s. Unfortunately, a series of baffling free-agency and draft decisions left their roster devoid of depth and talent by 2022. That year, the Jaguars beat them in the season finale to make the playoffs. Rightly, general manager Jon Robinson got the boot not long after. Mike Vrabel followed early in 2024.

Unfortunately (for the Titans), things haven't gotten much better since then. Tennessee already fired Robinson's successor, Ran Carthon, after just a couple years on the job. Mike Borgonzi was hired early in 2025 to fill the vacancy, but he hasn't inspired much confidence so far.

Circling back to Callahan, the expectation was that he was going to bring a fresh perspective to Nashville after spending four years as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Unfortunately, his success in Cincy didn't carry over to the Titans. He routinely looked overwhelmed, and due to his many responsibilities, his biggest strength, playcalling, was nullified.

During his stint with the Titans, Callahan won just a measly four games. As John Shipley of Sports Illustrated noted, that's as many as Liam Coen has tallied six weeks into his stint with the Jaguars.

Brian Callahan in 23-game Titans tenure: 4 wins

How do the Brian Callahan news affect the Jaguars?

The Titans weren't any good under Brian Callahan, and it's hard to see them turn things around the remainder of the season, regardless of who's appointed interim head coach. That said, the Jaguars can't afford to take their division foe lightly in their upcoming matchups.

Cam Ward has shown promise as a rookie and could eventually give Jacksonville fits. Then again, his supporting cast is lackluster, and Tennessee is in dire need of upgrades at most positions on both offense and defense.

At this point, it's hard to be confident that things will get better for Tennessee based on its recent track record of hiring general managers and head coaches. Maybe they will, but if you're a Titans fan (if so, thanks for reading the Black & Teal), don't hold your hopes too high. The Jaguars, for their part, should be glad that they nailed their most recent head coaching search, unlike their division foes.
