It may have dragged on for a while, but it increasingly looks as though FC Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong have reached an agreement for the player to extend his contract at the club. There were jitters among fans, given the Dutchman was in the final few months of his deal.
Frenkie has turned over a new leaf with regard to his career at the Catalan club since the arrival of Hansi Flick. Injured for the first six months, the Dutchman slowly but surely returned to his best level, and since then, he has not looked back.
Given that he is one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment, it was important for Barcelona to extend his contract sooner rather than later. Now, according to [Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20251013/1002549775/jong-firmado-2029-clausula-500-millones.html), everything has been agreed with Frenkie on a new contract until 2029, with his release clause set at €500m.
All the documents have been reviewed and the go-ahead has been given, [with Frenkie expected to put pen to paper on Wednesday](https://semprebarca.com/journalist-reveals-when-frenkie-de-jong-will-sign-new-barcelona-contract/). Importantly, the new deal will take effect from the start of next season.
Frenkie will be 29 by then, and this will effectively tie him to the club until he is 32. This means Barcelona have managed to keep hold of the player for his prime years as a footballer, which is a massive coup.
Given how important the Dutchman is to Flick’s team and the fact that he is a club captain who often leads the team due to Ronald Araujo’s inconsistent form, this will be a significant extension for the club. Let us hope it becomes official so we can put this saga behind us once and for all.
