Harbaugh Reveals Strategy Behind Cooper Rush’s Bench Decision
The Baltimore Ravens faced the Los Angeles Rams in a Week 6 clash that ended with a disappointing 17-3 scoreline. While the Ravens’ running game showcased a much-needed resurgence, their passing attack faltered, leading to questions about quarterback Cooper Rush’s performance and subsequent benching.
Running Game Shows Signs of Life
A silver lining for the Ravens was the impressive display from running back Derrick Henry, who achieved his first 100-yard game since Week 1, amassing 122 yards on 24 carries. The team collectively rushed for 179 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, a significant improvement from their previous outings.
However, the offensive success on the ground was overshadowed by the struggles in the air. Cooper Rush, stepping in for the injured Lamar Jackson, endured a challenging second start. He completed just 11 of 19 passes for 72 yards and threw an interception, failing to find a rhythm throughout the contest.
Fan Frustration Leads to Change
As frustration grew among the Ravens’ faithful, chants for a quarterback change echoed through the stadium. The fans got their wish when Tyler Huntley was inserted into the game during the fourth quarter. Although Huntley’s performance wasn’t flawless, he demonstrated a more effective command of the offense, completing 10 of 15 passes for 68 yards and adding 39 rushing yards on three carries.
Despite this uptick in production, Huntley struggled in critical red-zone situations, where the Ravens needed touchdowns to mount a comeback.
A Planned Transition?
What appeared to be a spur-of-the-moment decision to bench Rush was revealed to be part of a broader strategy. Following the game, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh clarified the intent behind the switch. “The plan all along was to play both quarterbacks,” Harbaugh stated.
This assertion may raise eyebrows among fans, as Rush’s struggles had not prompted an early change despite the Ravens totaling just 169 yards, alongside three turnovers and two failures on fourth down across their initial seven drives.
After Huntley entered, the Ravens managed 93 yards and faced two turnover on downs in their two drives. The urgency at that late stage suggested a need for more aggressive play, as the team was forced to gamble on fourth down to score.
Looking Ahead
It’s becoming increasingly clear that Huntley possesses a better understanding of the Ravens’ offensive scheme compared to Rush, aligning more closely with what the team aims to achieve. With Jackson expected to return, the Ravens face a decision during their bye week regarding who will serve as his backup between Rush and Huntley.
