The NFL held another doubleheader of games on Monday Night Football once again last night, with fans confused as to why the league continues to do so.

Over the last two decades, fans and teams alike have become used to seeing one primetime game on Thursday Night Football, one on Sunday Night Football, followed by the final game of the weekend being on Monday Night Football.

However, the league has decided to play two games on Monday in recent weeks, with the Buffalo Bills facing the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Commanders coming up against the Chicago Bears on the same evening, both ending in upset results. And while the NFL is being criticized for these decisions, they are not entirely to blame.

ESPN/ABC (owned by Walt Disney) had increased its television rights deal back in 2021 while wanting to host more primetime games across the regular season.

With the Thursday night slot taken up by Amazon Prime Video and the Sunday night slots owned by NBC, Disney has chosen to have two games on Mondays in certain weeks through the first seven weeks of the season.

Yes, you read that correctly, in the first seven weeks - meaning two games will also be played next Monday night.

As the games were ongoing this Monday, fans of all four teams could not understand the decision.

One wrote: "Why does the NFL continue to insist on overlapping these MNF games? I remember a few years back then they'd do back-to-back on Mondays. It was nice - just a cool little double-header; a mini Sunday.

"But lately, it feels like all we get is two games on at once. I guess that's okay if one of the matchups is a complete dog. But tonight, for example, both contests are close. And it sucks to be missing one.

"Why do this? Shouldn't the idea be to maximize eyes on the product?"

Another wrote: "Having two Monday Night NFL games only cheapens the whole MNF experience."

Next week will see two teams face each other again on Monday Night Football, with the Detroit Lions coming up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an exciting NFC showdown, before the Seattle Seahawks face C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans.

What's worse for next weekend's two games is the time that, for the second game, Seahawks vs. Texans is being played at 7pm local time on the West Coast.

That will mean the game will start at 10pm for those on the East Coast, with fans in the United Kingdom having to wait until 3am for the game to start.
